Southside Regional in Final Planning Stages for its New Facility Opening
How do you move a 300-bed hospital from one location to another? The answer to that question has more to do with advanced planning than the actual move. And planning is exactly what has been happening in Petersburg at Southside Regional Medical Center for the past few years.
The $145 million replacement facility is in its final phase of construction and will be ready to serve the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities this July. With 420,000 square feet and a full array of high tech equipment, the building will be the most efficient and comfortable hospital the region has experienced to date. With spacious private rooms, colorful bright waiting areas, and an open air courtyard for patients, families and visitors, the new hospital will offer a more efficient floor plan for accessing services in the massive facility. The new Emergency Room is 2 ½ times the size of the South Adams Street ER and the Intensive Care Unit will be expanded from 18 to 28 beds.
Planning the actual move at the level of detail necessary has been ongoing for the past several months. Under the careful direction of a hospital move consultant, special teams have been meeting, practicing and refining new protocols and processes for the new facility.
The move will be accomplished with military precision, including a carefully orchestrated patient transport convoy. Patient care teams will accompany patients and their families via ambulance to a receiving patient care team at the new hospital, moving more than 200 patients in a matter of a few hours.
But before the move actually takes place in late July, a series of special events will be held to allow the general public the opportunity to see the new hospital firsthand. In June, a Community Celebration Day is planned with food and fun activities for all ages, as well as, tours of the new building. Guided tours will provide the community a sneak peek of the many features and benefits the facility will offer. Among the many highlights of the tour, the public will be invited to see an Operating Room up close and experience a demonstration of Southside Regional’s advanced imaging capabilities.
Southside Regional Medical Center serves the cities of Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Chester, as well as, the counties of Dinwiddie, Prince George, southern Chesterfield, Surry and Sussex and surrounding communities. The hospital has nearly 300 physicians in more than 35 specialties including emergency/trauma services, cardiac care, general and minimally invasive surgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, gynecology and obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics, cancer treatment, wound care, behavioral health, gastroenterology, pain management, advanced diagnostic imaging, and a comprehensive offering of outpatient services. With approximately 1,400 employees, it is the city’s largest employer.
In 2007, Southside Regional provided care for 45,000 patients in its Emergency Room, treated 12,000 inpatients and 160,000 outpatients. As a community partner, it has a payroll of more than $57million and invested $3.5 million in new medical technology, in addition to the $145 million it will spend in the construction of the new hospital. The hospital provided more than $1.8 million in property & sales taxes to the city of and $12.7 million in charity and uncompensated care to the community-at-large.
