Cancer is a disease in which the body’s abnormal cells multiply at a higher than normal rate and spread to one or more parts of the body, sometimes causing the development of masses and tumors. SRMC's Cancer Center combines cancer treatment technology with oncology specialists to deliver care and support to cancer patients and their families.
Cancer Program at SRMC Fully Accredited with Commendation by the CoC
The Commission on Cancer (CoC) has granted a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation to the Cancer Program at Southside Regional Medical Center for the second consecutive time. SRMC also received the Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) from the CoC which is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the OAA following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program and also receives a compliance rating for the remaining 29 standards. The Cancer Center at Southside Regional Medical Center offers advanced technology for treating a wide range of cancers. But while technology is essential to battling cancer, it is the compassionate care and expertise of the treatment team that is the most memorable part of the healing journey. Our team of cancer specialists believes in providing the highest quality of care for our patients. We maintain close communication with your treatment team including your primary care physician. We believe patients and families require much physical and psychosocial support during their cancer journey and that cancer treatment and care should be convenient and available close to home. And while our new cancer center is close to home, it also provides a more comprehensive approach to fighting cancer by supplying our radiation therapy, medical oncology, infusion services and women’s imaging services under one roof.
Our oncology nurse navigation program helps meet the multiple needs of our oncology patients and their families. The registered nurse and her team help guide the patient and their family through their entire cancer journey and myriad of concerns. By assessing needs, educating and providing support and resources for each need, patients and their families feel equipped to deal with the many emotions they experience during cancer treatment. The navigation staff ensures our patients and their families are provided with psychosocial support, including distress management, psychosocial assessments and care, crisis intervention and individual, group and family counseling by licensed clinicians. Our patients also have full access to nutritional and rehabilitative support.
